Crystal Engraving

At The Crystal Shoppe we employ several different techniques for engraving crystal; the method chosen varies according to the item to engraved, the information we are engraving and the customer’s choice of engraving style (see Personalization Choices for more information on which font, style and technique is recommended for certain gift options).

The original purpose behind engraving glasses was that of identification, so quaffers would always be able to identify their own flagons (the modern day version, wine charms, spring to mind). Nowadays, monograms and personalization are used more as a fashion statement than a claim to ownership, but the principle forms of engraving crystal haven’t changed much.

Having said which, there exists today a dreadful technique, laser engraving, which ‘scratches’ the glass or crystal and looks awful when you see the finished product – the lines are all blurry and furry and indistinct – an abomination on the art of crystal engraving which we think should be outlawed forthwith.

Our preferred techniques – stone wheel engraving, sand-blasting, screen-printing and deep etching – all enhance the inherent beauty of the underlying crystal and impart to the finished item a distinction and individuality which render it unique.
